Instead of just referring to classifieds in the paper and job search websites, many people are looking for employment on social media sites such as LinkedIn and Facebook.
These sites allow us to make connections with friends and family, even allowing us to network and potentially find a new employer.
In 2011, the U.S. Department of Labor, DirectEmployers Association, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the National Association Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA) and Facebook combined efforts to establish the Social Jobs Partnership (SJP).
This is an initiative that 'leverages social media to connect great jobs with great candidates', with Facebook unveiling the SJP app today (November 15).
The new tool will make it easier for people to 'find and share employment opportunities' on Facebook.
Employment opportunities are provided by websites such as BranchOut, DirectEmployers Association, Jobvite, Work4Labs and Monster.com – with these developers offering access to more than 1.7 million jobs on Facebook.
A blog post on Facebook's Social Jobs Partnership page says that the app was created to 'tap into the growing trend of talent acquisition through social media'.
A NACE survey found that 50 per cent of employers are using Facebook in their hiring process, with many anticipating that the site will become a more important part of the talent acquisition process in the future.
Around 90 per cent of companies surveyed stated that Facebook has decreased the amount of print advertising in regards to recruitment, with Facebook making it a 'cost effective' way to find new employees.
U.S. secretary of labour Hilda Solis said: "Today, we're taking an important next step with the announcement of this valuable new application. Through the expertise of our partners and the foundation of an industry-supported open source job posting schema, the Social Jobs Partnership is helping get America back to work."
