Australian Open trending on Twitter

After the disappointment of this summer's Ashes series, Australian sports fans are turning their attention from cricket to tennis.

It's second round day today and tennis fans are using Twitter to keep track of the scores and share their thoughts with the world. "Andy Roddick", the popular former world number one, was a trending topic today as he recovered from a shaky start to dispatch outsider Igor Kunitsyn in straight sets.

"Verdasco" (Spanish player Fernando) also got some Tweet heat as he battled it out with Janko Tipsarevic in the Hisense Arena.

The hash tag #ausopen has stayed in the top ten all day as tennis fans tweet about the action at the professional tour's first Grand Slam of 2011.

Besides tennis, Aussie Twitter fans have been taking an interest in the latest addition to the Bloom-Kerr household.

Miranda Kerr, the Aussie model and wife of British actor Orlando Bloom, released the first pictures of her and new baby Flynn, in this morning's papers. Both "Miranda Kerr" and "Flynn" were trending on Twitter this afternoon.

News that Gary Ablett has been appointed captain of AFL outfit the Gold Coast Suns also registered among the Twitterati. "Gary Ablett" and "Gold Coast Suns" made it into Australia's top ten.
