Google+ introduces popular games
A number of popular games have landed on Google+ including handheld blockbuster Angry Birds.
In a blog post on Thursday (August 11), senior vice president of engineering Vic Gundotra went through a number of popular titles that gamers can expect to play on Google's popular social media platform.
Established hits Bejeweled Blitz and Zynga Poker will no doubt keep fans glued to their monitors for weeks to come, with more titles on the way.
For those who already predict that their stream will be inundated with game score updates and achievements, Google have heard your pre-emptive protests.
According to Gundotra: "If you’re not interested in games, it’s easy to ignore them. Your stream will remain focused on conversations with the people you care about."
Google's approach to gaming is consistent with its overall social experience.
"With the Google+ we want to bring the nuance and richness of real-life sharing to the web … We want to make playing games online just as fun, and just as meaningful, as playing in real life," says Gundotra.
It is likely that Angry Birds will cause a swell in the number of Google+ accounts, with the game already having sold 12 million copies in the Apple Store alone.
Gaming for social media is nothing new – Facebook has long been the king of the casual scene with many jumping on board titles such as Mafia Wars and Farmville.
Family and friends can expect their social spheres to become a little more competitive with gaming options broadening.
The arrival of games on Google+ showcases the flexibility of social media platforms.
Previously designed as the domain of friends and content sharing group, services such as Facebook have led the way in new social media marketing strategies by teaching companies the value of creating engaging online content.
