Nelson Mandela movie tweet prompts backlash [VIDEO]

Hi and welcome to another content marketing news bite from Castleford Media.

With the world taking to Twitter this week to pay its virtual respects to Nelson Mandela it was only a matter of time before someone tweeted something inappropriate.

On this occasion, the wrath of the Twitter community fell upon Deadline.com founder Nikki Finke, after she appeared to use a “RIP Mandela” tweet to plug the recently-released movie “Mandela: The long walk to freedom”.

A hashtag called “FinkeObits” quickly popped up with Tweeters and celebrities offering their own mock movie-themed obituaries for everyone from Kim Jong-il to Abraham Lincoln.

Finke’s tweet came just a couple of days after Spaghetti-O’s maker Campbell’s Soups was forced to apologise for an ill-conceived tweet on the anniversary of Pearl Harbour.

“We meant to pay respect, not to offend,” the company said in a follow-up tweet apologising for the gaffe.

One thing’s for sure when it comes to Twitter PR blunders. You won’t have to wait too long for the next one.
