Pinterest on the go: App released for Android, iPad and iPhone

Pinterest is a social media platform bursting with original content and ideas – but now we will be able to find inspiration from the site on the go, with the release of the Pinterest app.

The company launched the app on August 14 for Android, iPad and iPhone, which is available now from Google Play and iTunes.

"Whether you’re traveling to another city, checking out gadgets in a store, or cooking dinner in your kitchen, you can now take Pinterest with you. Our apps allow you to pin, discover, and access your account from wherever you choose," reads a post on the Pinterest blog on (August 14).

Pinterest encourages that the apps were designed to let people go on about their lives – dreaming, planning and preparing – without having to be seated in front of a computer, creating a platform where this can be done on the go.

Pinterest is used by many companies as a social media marketing tool, to reach their target audiences in promoting specific products and brands.

Whether this be a new baking tool, pet collar or pair of designer shoes, Pinterest can help to ensure that companies have an audience to advertise to, with the help of the 'categories' function.

An infographic created by visual marketing company Lemon.ly, looked at the "visual pinboard' of Pinterest and found a few interesting statistics.

There are now over 10 million Pinterest users with a staggering 97 per cent of Pinterests' Facebook fans being women.

The platform is used by a variety of big brands and companies such as Sesame Street, People, Unicef, Gap and Blockbuster, where around two million Facebook-connected users are said to be on Pinterest daily.

Pinterest is valuable to any content marketing strategy where it is stated to have generated more referral traffic to websites than Youtube, Google+ and LinkedIn combined.
