Tourism Australia launches ‘world’s first’ Facebook travel app of its kind

The scope of social media marketing for Australian tourism is bound to grow larger, with the launch of the new Discover Australia Through Your Friends Facebook app.

The app was launched early last week, allowing keen travellers to get ideas for their Australian holiday with the help of their Facebook friends.

Touted as the first of its kind in the world, the app allows people to discuss their experiences in various destinations, make new discoveries through other Facebook users stories and share photos of those experiences.

Allowing the opportunity for people to share experiences, interact and engage is important in any content strategy, as this app aims to do.

Combining the best of Facebook and Google Maps technology, it provides a more enhanced and in-depth experience of travel, allowing users to engage in the geographical scale of the destination as well as some helpful commentary from people who have visited the area. 

Earlier in the month, Tourism Australia did some research into how social media plays a part in the way Australians travel around their country and the impact it can have.

Managing director of Tourism Australia Andrew McEvoy says the research indicates that more travellers are going to social media networks for inspiration in planning and getting the best out of their holidays. 

"Facebook remains a key plank in Tourism Australia’s social media strategy to promote the country’s tourism credentials at home and abroad through the power of advocacy," Mr McEvoy said.

The Tourism Australia Facebook page is said to be the largest in Australia with more than 3.3 million fans – where word of mouth may further spread with the launch of the app.

Tourism Australia's executive general manager of consumer marketing Nick Baker says the new app is a great tool for the industry, where friends can help to share "great ideas to plan and make the most of your trip".
