Twitter to launch new music service?

Twitter could soon be increasing its presence in the online world even further, as it emerges that the microblogging site has made a new acquisition.

Australian music discovery site We Are Hunted has been bought by the social network, but specifics of what the move will mean are being kept under wraps.

The site was developed in Brisbane and allows users to play, discover and share new music online.

A statement on We Are Hunted's website said there is "no question that Twitter and music go well together", explaining that she site is used by artists across the world to connect with fans.

Current users will find that their accounts are shut down, leaving many music fans wondering what will be next for the site.

News of the purchase came as was launched online, which features the hashtag #music, leading to speculation that a new Twitter app could be on the horizon.

American Idol host Ryan Seacrest fuelled the rumour mill after he recently tweeted that he had been using a yet-to-be-released Twitter music app.

He wrote: "Playing with Twitter's new music app (yes it's real!) … there's a serious dance party happening at idol right now. Shows what artists are trending, also has up-and-coming artists."

The comments were retweeted by the official Twitter account, which many people have taken as confirmation that an app is in the pipeline.

News of these extensive changes at the social network will no doubt make it more important than ever for companies to run Twitter campaigns, especially as all attention will be on the site for the foreseeable future.

Sharing original content is all part of the Twitter ethos – so whether users are sending a song they have heard to their friends or sharing details of an artist, keeping ahead of the game is essential.
