Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has been around for almost 20 years, and is still one of the world’s most widely-used browsers.

However, a new report by Adobe Digital Index has found Google Chrome has taken the lead from Internet Explorer as the most popular browser platform in the US.

According to the report, Chrome has been rising steadily over the past few years, and is now used by 31.8 per cent of all US internet users.

Internet Explorer hasn’t been as fortunate, declining to 30.9 per cent this year.

But Internet explorer still has a wide following amongst desktop browsers, with 43.3 per cent.

Only a few years ago in 2008, Internet Explorer occupied over 80 per cent of the market.

This dramatic shift in power is largely thought to be driven by the popularity of Google’s tools such as Gmail and Google+.

Down here in Australia, Chrome is the most popular browser by a long shot. According to StatCounter, Google Chrome is used by 36.9 per cent of Australians, compared to only 23.69 per cent who use Internet Explorer.
