Over its 16-year lifespan, Google has transformed the way we use the internet, continuously making it easier for us to search, shop or just kill time.
Now the world’s largest search engine has become so influential it could replace a US government branch.
The National Technical Information Service (NTIS) was created in 1950 and is chiefly responsible for producing and distributing reports on scientific, technical, engineering, and business-related advancements.
However, the majority of the departmental reports can now be found in Google search results.
The new act aimed at closing down the department has been titled “Let me Google that for you“.
The piece of legislation found that 74 per cent of the reports gathered by the department were readily available online, 95 per cent of which were free of charge.
If the act goes ahead, US taxpayers would save around $67 million a year, according to NBC News.
