When is the best time to post online?
Figuring out the type of content your target audience is going to find engaging is only part of the battle – it’s also important to make sure they actually see your content.
So when is the best time to post online?
Well first, it’s important to understand how consumers are using the internet.
Since the internet now has such a prominent role in our personal and professional lives, researchers at USC Viterbi School of Engineering sought to better understand the way we use the internet, as well as monitor and take action against internet outages.
The study revealed that despite living in an internet-centric time, the internet goes to “sleep” in some regions.
The researchers monitored 3.7 million of the world’s 4 billion IP address blocks every 11 minutes over the course of two months.
In Western Europe and the US, the internet is constantly working for broadband users, but in areas such as Asia, South America, and Eastern Europe, as well as Australia and New Zealand, the internet is largely inactive for a long period during the night.
“This data helps us establish a baseline for the Internet — to understand how it functions, so that we have a better idea of how resilient it is as a whole, and can spot problems quicker,” said John Heidemann, research professor at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering’s Information Sciences Institute, and the study’s corresponding author.
So if you’re posting news articles or blogs, it’s best to do so during the day. According to data by Kissmetrics, the morning is the best time to post blogs, with over 70 percent of survey respondents saying they read blogs in the morning – the most traffic occurring at 11 am – while Monday is the best day to post.
While there is far more activity during the daytime, there is also a lot more competition. However, there are a few perks to posting during off-peak hours, such as more prominence and higher search results, but this also means less visitors.
When it comes to social media marketing, the best times to post differs depending on the platform.
According to data collected by SurePayroll and Ghergich & Co., the best time to post on Twitter is between 9am and 3pm (with the highest traffic occurring between 1 and 3pm) on Mondays through to Thursdays
The best times to post on LinkedIn is Tuesdays to Thursdays at noon or between 5-6pm, while Saturday mornings is the best time to post on Pinterest.
And for the world’s largest social site, Facebook, posts between 1pm and 4pm receive the highest click-through rates, and the site has the largest amount of traffic on Wednesdays at 3pm.
