Wrestling superstars partner with Tout for new social media strategy
You might not expect a bunch of muscled up professional wrestlers to be the most social media savvy sorts of people, but World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is determined to prove you wrong.
Earlier this month (July 11), the company announced it would be partnering with Tout Industries to create a new dynamic social media experience for viewers.
Tout is a free service which allows users to create 15-second video updates from their smartphones, which can then be shared via Twitter, Facebook or other social media sites.
"WWE looks forward to partnering with Tout to grow this innovative social media platform," said WWE chairman Vince McMahon.
"Tout’s real-time video technology will become a critical component of fan interactivity in our weekly television programming and will be utilized to connect WWE directly with our fans in new ways."
A range of WWE superstars have signed up for Tout accounts, including Kofi Kingston, Sheamus and Brodus Clay.
They join a host of celebrities who have already begun experimenting with the video microblogging technology, such as basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal and Survivor host Jeff Probst.
WWE is encouraging fans to get involved as well, by submitting Touts which will be played during WWE TV shows, on the official WWE website and even on arena video displays during live events.
The announcement is the latest move in WWE's extensive ongoing social media strategy, which is intended to bridge the gap between fans and the larger than life wrestling personalities.
For example, the majority of WWE superstars run a Twitter account from which they share opinions and original content with fans.
"I've got a huge announcement tonight on #Raw! LIVE 9/8 CT @USA_Network" tweeted former WWE champion John Cena earlier today.
Other superstars are less courteous, using the micro blog format to boast about their accomplishments and slander opponents.
"Deal with it. I'll work first. I'll work hurt. I'll (out) work anybody. Best. In. The. World." tweeted CM Punk yesterday (July 16).
